Assessment of Atmospheric Pollution from Cupola Foundries
- Client: Government of India
- Financing agency: United Nations
EDT visited Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to assess the emissions from iron smelting cupolas.
The project remit included the enhancement of the capabilities of SITARC Pump Institute (SPI) in assessing, measuring and controlling pollution emissions to air from small and medium sized cupola furnaces melting pig iron with coke to make iron castings for use by pumpset manufacturers around Coimbatore, South India.
This enabled us to produce a strategy document outlining the course of action required by the cupola industry to assess the design and operation of the cupolas, measure emissions to air using appropriate sampling and analytical techniques and adopt operational procedures and design modifications that reduce emissions to air.
